The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass is a compelling tale of a young girl named Lyra Belaque who finds out that her destiny will affect the destinies of others. Phillip Pullman is the author of The Golden Compass and he does a fantastic job of making The Golden Compass a mysterious fantasy. Pullman pulls in great characteristics of a fantasy into like talking bears that are also armored called the Panserbjorne and the fantasy of different worlds. Pullman also has many different races of people in The Golden Compass help Lyra achieve her destiny. Phillip Pullman also gives everyone (Gyptians, Witches, and humans) in this book a daemon. A lifelong companion that helps their owner in good times and bad.

The Golden Compass begins with Lyra hiding in the retiring room, a forbidden room in her home Jordan College. The room only allows scholars and very important high class people to sit in it. It is in this room that Lyra learns about a unidentified source of matter called dust, that everyone wants to investigate further. Then some terrible group of people called the Gobblers take Lyra’s friend Roger and other children. They take them up north to experiment on them and their daemons. Then Lyra gets taken by Ms Coulter her mother as we found out from the Gyptians. Lyra finds out that her mother is in charge of the Gobblers and she decides to run away. She is then almost killed by hunters when the Gyptians save her and vow their service to her to find Roger and help him and all the other children escape. When the Gyptians and Lyra arrive in the witch village, Lyra finds Iorek Byrnison an exiled bear who also vows his services to Lyra and the Gyptians. The Gyptians, Lyra and Iorek Byrnison set out across the barren arctic tundra. Their fate is yet to be seen…

I liked the golden Compass because of Pullman capability of combining adventure with a fantasy. These are my two favorite genres and Pullman did a great job of using both. I also liked the two characters Iorek Byrnison and Lyra who were both brave characters that in sight of any danger always found a way by and always looked for danger together. When Lyra and Iorek went to the strange village they weren’t sure if it were dangerous but they still went without flinching. Iorek Byrnison I especially liked because he always took danger and obstacles straight in the head. I also thought it was interesting that Iorek created his own spirit. I would rate The Golden Compass as a four and a half star book. I would encourage anyone who likes fantasy or adventure to read it.
