Place commas between items in a series. Omitting the comma before the conjunction distorts the rhythm and clarity of the sentence. (How many Stooges laughed?)

If the series includes items that are long or contain internal commas, place semicolons between the items instead of commas.

Red, white and blue are Bess’s favorite colors.

Larry, Moe and Curly laughed.

Gerald Ford, the former President, F. Bosco, D.D.S., my dentist, Max, and Norma went to lunch.
